The following classes of steam locomotives existed during the 20th Century. Several other types also operated on Queensland Railways but they were extinct by the turn of the century and are not listed.

In addition to the above list, there were also engines obtained from local authorities under the North Coast Railway Act of 1910 and from the Chillagoe Railway & Mining Co in 1919.
