New trains 1cm too big for tunnels Print E-mail

THE Queensland Government said its new trains are too big for some Brisbane tunnels.

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,21286040-1702,00.html

The first of 44 trains arrived last month as part of a contract worth $550 million.

Engineers at Queensland Rail (QR) found the air conditioning units on top of the trains were a centimetre wider than specified.

This was considered too much of a tight fit in a 4m-long stretch of tunnelling from the Central Station to nearby Fortitude Valley, Transport Minister Paul Lucas said.

One of the trains has already been sent back for adjustments to the manufacturer, EDI Bombardier, at Maryborough in south-east Queensland.

"All trains are built to have safe clearance levels across the QR network," Mr Lucas said.

"Identifying issues like this is precisely why we have this type of rigorous acceptance testing."

QR has said it may use some of the trains outside the city centre and expected they would be back on track for timetable changes, scheduled for May.

Mr Lucas said all of the new trains would undergo a rigorous 1200-plus point check before they were put into service.

"I'm keener than anyone to see these trains in service but the State Government won't be asking for these vital checks to be rushed," Mr Lucas said.

Something we already knew for a while

A factor that was mentioned a while ago on the Yahoogroup, and the fact that EDI/Bombardier were already working out the problem. Gotta love how late the press is at times.
