Historic sawmill burns down

May 06, 2007 12:00am

THE historic Grandchester sawmill in southeast Queensland has been destroyed
by fire.

The mill has been operated by the Gillam family since 1941 and was listed on
the national heritage trust.

A local fire unit took more than an hour to put out the fire in the early
hours of this morning. The fire was not believed to have been supicious but
police were investigating.

The mill housed one of the few remaining steam powered mills in Australia.

I would like to thankyou for posting this article to make people aware of what happened. I would just like to say that we are going to attempt to restore and rebuild to preserve the historical value of the mill. Please have a look at the website to see if you may be able to help as we will be posting items that we will be trying to find to assist in the restoration. Regards, Ian.
