Councils seek Federal Govt commitment to inland rail plan

Councils pushing for an inland rail line to be built between Brisbane and Melbourne will meet today in Toowoomba, in southern Queensland.

The Australian Transport and Energy Corridor already has approval to complete a line between Toowoomba and Gladstone, but wants a commitment from the Federal Government to extend the line to Melbourne.

Millmerran Shire Council Mayor Paul Antonio says mayors want the Government and Opposition to commit to start construction of the railway in the next term of Parliament.

"Each train has the potential to take 150 semi-trailers off the road and that would have a tremendous effect," he said.

"We are heavily involved with the problems on the Gore Highway and the lack of funding there and I'm sure the impact of the inland rail would be very positive."
